Walter Clayton Jr. breaks Florida Gators three-point record

With a three-point shot made in the second half of a comeback win over South Carolina, senior guard Walter Clayton re-wrote the Florida basketball history books.

With his first three of the game, Clayton broke UF’s record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer, breaking Michael Frazier’s record of 41 set from Jan. 23, 2014, through Jan. 24, 2015. Clayton tied the record in a win over Texas last weekend in Gainesville. It was news to him, when reporters mentioned that he was now tied atop the record book with Frazier.

“I just learned about the streak, a couple of weeks ago when it 36, 37. I honestly can’t remember the last game (with no 3-pointer), 41 games, that’s what it was,” Clayton said of his streak at the time. I know to have my name with some of those other guys up there, they were great players. Obviously being a part of the Gators tradition. I’m happy about that. But just getting a win, that’s all that matters.”

Clayton leads the Gators in scoring with a career-high 17.8 points per game. Clayton is also averaging 3.4 assists and  He’s currently averaging 19.2 points in SEC play after the South Carolina win.

Clayton has only had one game without a three-pointer in two years at Florida. He went 0-for-1 from behind the arc last season against Quinnipiac on Dec. 30, 2023. He’s made a triple in 54 of 55 career games with Florida.

The Gators will be back at home this weekend when they host Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
